The event
WaterFire is a sculpture of fire on the rivers of downtown Providence: braziers lit at sunset along the water, tended from boats, with music and the crowds on the riverwalks. WaterFire Providence, a non-profit, runs a season of lightings from late spring to New Year's Eve; every lighting is free.
Three kinds of evening appear on the schedule. Full lightings cover more of the river and finish at the time listed for that date; partial and basin lightings cover a shorter area. The starts-at-sunset events gather at the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge.
2026 dates and locations
The next full lightings are October 17 and October 24, followed by November 7. October 29 is a shorter bridge lighting, December 11 a holiday basin lighting and December 31 a bridge lighting. The September 26 full lighting was cancelled; October 24 was added afterward.
Sunset and the lighting ceremony are different times: the organiser lists sunset at 6:01 p.m. and the ceremony at 6:18 p.m. on October 17. Use the programme for your exact date; shorter events do not follow the full-river route.
Planning the night
Choose dinner before the lighting or after its listed finish, then plan the walk back to your accommodation. A base near the route can reduce the return journey; confirm the restaurant and hotel arrangements for your date.
For a full lighting, arrive before sunset to see the fires lit, then walk the river in one direction. For a partial or basin lighting, go to the locations listed for that date. Keep a fallback: WaterFire posts schedule changes on its site.
